Project EATS invites you to a dinner with Jeffrey Gibson in conversation with Linda Goode Bryant.

Founded in 2009 by artist Linda Goode Bryant, Project EATS is a living installation transforming vacant lots and rooftops into neighborhood-based farms supporting farm stands and community programs to catalyze creativity and cultivate greater food sovereignty across New York City. Communities deserve to grow their food right where they live–art that feeds.

This intimate gathering will feature a thought-provoking conversation exploring the intersection of art and activism.

Dinner will feature a seasonal Spring menu curated by Manuela restaurant.

RSVP by May 16th. Seating is limited.

Jeffrey Gibson Bio

Jeffrey Gibson grew up in major urban centers in the United States, Germany, and Korea, where he absorbed the transgressive soundtrack of the 1980s through limited access to MTV. Gibson graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995 and received a Master of Arts in painting at the Royal College of Art, London, in 1998. While in Chicago he also worked as a research assistant on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) for the Field Museum, a formative experience that fostered an ongoing interest in questions of ownership and notions of cultural translation. Though trained as a painter, Gibson began incorporating materials and techniques that deliberately reference his heritage—such as raw hides and bead work—around 2010. A major turning point in his career, in 2012 he presented ‘one becomes the other,’ his first solo exhibition of sculpture and video, at Participant Inc. Sculpture, moving image, and sound have since become an integral aspect of his practice. He is known for his immersive, multi-sensory installations that invoke and interweave such disparate contexts as faith-based spaces of communion and night clubs.

Linda Goode Bryant Bio

Linda Goode Bryant is the Founder and President of Project EATS. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she came to New York City in 1972 to attend graduate school and become involved in the arts. After working as Director of Education at the Studio Museum in Harlem, she opened Just Above Midtown, Inc. (JAM) in 1974. JAM was the first gallery to show work by African-American and other artists of color in a major gallery district. In the mid-1990s, she transitioned to experimental and documentary filmmaking. While documenting American voting patterns, she founded Active Citizen Project (ACP) to empower non-voters and marginalized communities in addressing their social, economic, environmental, and cultural priorities. In 2009, ACP evolved into Project EATS, establishing community-based farms and programs throughout New York City.
